Cartagena with Kids and Family: Tips and Where to Stay
Cartagena is a great family destination: beaches, history, great food and direct flights from many cities. With a little planning the trip is easy, even with small children or grandparents.
Best time to go
Cartagena is warm year-round. The driest season runs roughly from December to April, with breezes and clear skies; it is also the busiest, especially over the holidays and Easter week, so book early. September to November tends to be rainier, usually in short downpours.
Calm beaches for kids
Not all of Cartagena’s beaches are the same. El Laguito’s beach, at the tip of Bocagrande, has especially calm water — perfect for kids playing by the shore. For a day trip, many families take a boat to the Rosario Islands or Barú, where the water is clearer.
Things to do as a family
Some activities that work well with kids:
- Walk the Walled City in the late afternoon, once the heat drops.
- Visit Castillo San Felipe de Barajas and explore its tunnels.
- Spend a day on the Rosario Islands or Playa Blanca (Barú).
- Watch the sunset over the bay from El Laguito or the city walls.
- Try tropical fruit, raspados (shaved ice) and arepas de huevo.
Practical tips
- Always bring water and sunscreen: the Caribbean sun is strong even when cloudy.
- Plan outings early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
- Taxis and ride-hailing apps work well; the airport is about 20 minutes from El Laguito.
- An apartment with a kitchen makes kids’ meals easier and saves money.
Why an apartment beats a hotel for families
With kids, having a kitchen, fridge, living room and separate bedrooms makes the trip far more comfortable: little ones nap while adults relax on the terrace, and you don’t have to eat out three times a day.
Our apartments in El Laguito are a 2-minute walk from the beach. Turquesa is ideal for families of up to 6, Zafiro sleeps up to 12, and if the extended family is coming, the entire duplex sleeps up to 18.
