Where to Stay in Cartagena: El Laguito vs Bocagrande vs the Old City

Updated: October 9, 2026

Picking the right neighborhood completely changes a trip to Cartagena. Waking up facing the sea is very different from waking up on a colonial street downtown. Here we compare the most popular areas so you can choose based on what you want.

The Old City (Walled City)

This is postcard Cartagena: colonial streets, flower-covered balconies, plazas, restaurants and nightlife. Great for travelers who want to explore on foot and go out at night.

Keep in mind: there is no beach, places to stay tend to be smaller and pricier, and it can be noisy on weekends.

Getsemaní

The neighborhood next to the Old City, known for street art, a bohemian vibe and plenty of options for younger travelers and backpackers. Very lively at night. No beach, and some streets are loud.

Bocagrande

Cartagena’s modern district, with beachfront high-rises, hotels, malls, supermarkets and restaurants. Convenient for families and anyone who wants the beach with every service nearby. The main avenue can be congested and the beach busier.

El Laguito

El Laguito sits at the tip of the Bocagrande peninsula. It has Bocagrande’s convenience —beach, shops and restaurants nearby— but is quieter and more residential. Its water is among the calmest in Cartagena, and it has some of the best sunset views over the bay.

From El Laguito, central Bocagrande is about 8 minutes away, the Old City about 15 minutes by taxi, Castillo San Felipe about 20 minutes and the airport about 20 minutes.

A quick summary:

  • Couples who want nightlife and architecture: the Old City.

  • Families who want beach and amenities: Bocagrande or El Laguito.
  • Large groups, families with kids, or anyone looking to relax by the sea: El Laguito.
