Traveling to Cartagena with a big group —extended family, friends, a bachelor or bachelorette party, or a celebration— comes with one clear challenge: finding a place where everyone can stay together without paying for several separate hotel rooms. This guide covers what to know before you book.
Hotel or vacation rental for a large group?
At a hotel, a group of 12 or more ends up split across four, five or six rooms, sometimes on different floors, with no shared space to hang out. Each room is also billed separately.
A large vacation rental or duplex lets the group share a living room, kitchen and terrace. You can make breakfast together, celebrate privately and split a single nightly rate, which is usually cheaper per person.
Which part of Cartagena to choose
For groups who want beach and convenience, Bocagrande and El Laguito are the most practical areas: the beach is steps away, with supermarkets, restaurants and taxis available all day. The Old City is beautiful but has few places that fit large groups, and no beach.
El Laguito, at the tip of the Bocagrande peninsula, is quieter than central Bocagrande and has some of the calmest water in the city — a plus if you travel with kids or older relatives.
Checklist before you book
Before paying, confirm these points with the host:
- Real capacity: how many beds there are and how many people sleep comfortably.
- Number of bathrooms: with 12+ people, several bathrooms make a big difference.
- Air conditioning in every bedroom (essential in Cartagena).
- A large common area: a terrace or living room that fits the whole group.
- Payment terms: whether you can pay a deposit and split the balance among several people.
- Distance to the beach and how easy it is to get transportation.
Splitting the payment

Our option for groups: the Zafiro & Turquesa duplex
Our duplex in El Laguito combines two apartments in the same building: Zafiro, on the upper floor with a panoramic terrace over the bay, and Turquesa, below with an ocean-facing balcony. Together they offer 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and room for up to 18 guests, with the beach a 2-minute walk away.
For smaller groups, Zafiro alone sleeps up to 12 and Turquesa up to 6.
